Oakland, CA—The Oakland Raiders couldn’t resist their traditional need for speed, making the “fastest guy at the NFL Combine” Arkansas running back Darren McFadden their 4th overall in round 1 of the 2008 NFL Draft.
After weeks of denials by head coach Lane Kiffin in which he emphatically stated the Raiders were “stacked at the (running back) position,” not looking to McFadden but to adding depth on the defensive line, Kiffin finally admitted Saturday that he “knew months ago this was the guy we’ve got to have.”
The Raiders re-signed their standout running backs Justin Fargas and Dominic Rhodes while they still have Michael Bush chomping at the bit for a shot to prove he can contribute to this team and possibly dominate the run core.
McFadden’s speed and athletic ability a la Marcus Allen will give the Raiders more insurance for the success of the run game which will help 2nd year quarterback Jamarcus Russell be more successful, affording him options.
Kiffin discussed the possibility of 2-back sets with McFadden outside or in the backfield saying his versatility as a receiver reminds him of another USC runner, Reggie Bush. "The time I talked to the Raiders coaching staff, they tell me they're missing a playmaker from their offense," McFadden said. "I feel I can add to that with my big-play ability."
McFadden can help the Raiders win games now but Kiffin’s beliefs in “not throwing too much at him” early on in order to “bring him along” because “there’s lots to learn,” could stifle this athlete and hurt the chance of scoring touchdowns.
